Bible Studies

Zion offers a wide variety of opportunities to study God’s Word.  Here is a listing of some of the available studies.

Narthex Bible Study (Sunday Morning)
This Bible Study meets in the Narthex (the open entry area of the church) every Sunday at 8:45 a.m.  During the Summer, when the worship time changes, we meet at 8:00 a.m.   This study is led by one of the pastors and covers a wide variety of subjects including books of the Bible.  The newsletter will have specific details of the topics being discussed.

W-17 Bible Study (Sunday Morning)
This Bible study meets in one of our larger classrooms (W-17), located on the west side of the church in the new Fellowship Hall edition.  This Bible study typically deals with topical studies of God’s word.  Sometimes videos are used in support of the topic presented.  Judy Gronbach is the current leader of this Bible Study.  This too meets at 8:45 a.m. on Sunday morning.

Chapel Bible Study (Sunday Morning)
This Bible study meets in the Chapel, which provides and quiet and uninterrupted opportunity to study God’s Word.  This study is led by either one of the pastors or a lay member.  Subjects covered include books of the Bible and current topics.  This study meets at 8:45 a.m. and usually dismisses for the summer.

Women’s Bible Study
This Bible study meets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  Participants can choose between a 9:15 a.m. session led by Angela Naeve on Wednesdays, or a 6:30 p.m. session led by Judy Gronbach on Tuesdays.  This study is a video driven study and deals with many contemporary issues.

Ladies Wednesday Morning Bible Study
One of the pastors leads the Wednesday Morning Women’s Bible Study.  We meet from September through May at 10:00 a.m. in the Narthex (the open entry area of the church).  This group usually studies one of the books of the Bible and may cover either one or two books a year.  This is a relax study that provides for plenty of discussion, that often varies from the book that is being discussed.

Men’s Bible Breakfast
Men’s Bible Breakfast meets on the third Saturday of each month at 7:00 a.m.   We meet at Miller’s Landing in Humboldt for breakfast (ordered from the menu), Bible study and fellowship.  The bible study topics include a biblical discussion of current events and issues facing the church along with selected portions of Scripture.  The Iowa District West holds a Men’s Ministry breakfast in the spring and fall which our men join for that day.  The Men’s Bible Breakfast is open to all men of the congregation.   Please join us one Saturday morning.

Prayer Chain

Our gracious Lord has given us the beautiful invitation to offer our prayers to Him.  St. Paul writes to young Timothy, “I urge… that requests, prayers, intercessions and thanksgiving be made for everyone.”  Zion’s Prayer Chain is an important part of our congregation’s ministry.

Members submit prayer requests to one of the pastors, the church office or by email, these requests are then passed on through the Prayer Chain.  The email prayer chain has proven effective as the same prayer is passed on through the church office at the same time to all its members.  Prayers may be for members of Zion as well as non-members.  If you would like to be added to the Prayer Chain, please contact the church office for more information, 515-332-3279.

To send a prayer chain request please email [email protected] or call 515-332-3279.

Funerals

During the time of a funeral, seemingly much of life may seem turned upside down.  During this time of crisis Zion exists to share the Gospel and thereby tells a message of hope, of life, of victory, for those who die in Jesus.

Our normal policy is to conduct funerals for members or their family at the church.  The family, on certain occasions, may decide to have the service held Funeral Home.  A Funeral Committee, under the supervision of the Board of Elders, is prepared to service a lunch, either before or after the committal service.  The pastors may conduct a funeral service for a non-member at the funeral home.  The members of Zion are here to minister to the grieving family in this their time of sorrow.  We witness to the living hope that is found in our resurrected Lord and Savior Jesus - who is the source of eternal life.

LWML

Lutheran Women s Missionary League (LWML) The LWML focuses on affirming each woman in her relationship with Christ to enable her to be in ministry among the people of the world. For 60 years the organization has been encouraging and equipping women to live out their Christian lives in active mission ministries and to financially support global missions.  The group meets to discuss local activities, and has an emphasis in the support of mission and ministry throughout the world by means of mite box offerings. These mite box offerings have funded tens of millions of dollars in mission grants since 1942. The Gemutlichkeit Dinner (a traditional German meal) brings all women together to serve this early December fund raiser. All dinner proceeds support mission ministries.

Choir

The Adult Choir, established over 60 years ago, is open to all confirmed members. It sings twice monthly (Sept. through May), and more often at Christmas time and Passion Week.  Choir practice is at 5:15 p.m. in the chapel (or 6:30 p.m. during Advent and Lent).

Weddings

Marriage is the life-long union of one man and one woman.  A church wedding asks God’s blessing upon the couple as they begin their life as husband and wife.  The ceremony is a worship service celebrating God’s love and the couples love for each other.  Prior to the wedding the pastors meet with the couple for pre-marriage counseling.  Counseling usually discusses the biblical plan for marriage, an inventory discussing the human characteristic of bride and groom,  and includes a time to plan the wedding service itself.  Please contact the church office as you plan your wedding as the office will know the availability of dates for the wedding.

We the church has published a wedding manual detailing the procedure for weddings at Zion.
